The Real Cost Of The Cloud

Waveform's Blog

Wednesday, 14 December 2011 15:54

We came across this interesting article today that we'd like to share with everyone about the true costs of cloud hosting. We hear a lot about the cloud these days, but frankly, not all of it is true. Head on over to Chris Chandler's blog to read more.

The tl;dr:
Cloud computing isn't that "cheap" unless you're talking about tiny costs that early, early stage startups might face. Once you know you will require dedicated infrastructure it's very likely worth it to get your own hardware. You're employing technical people anyway; have some of them manage your infrastructure. You would have needed some people doing it with your cloud hosting anyway. Being able to throw stuff away is nice, but so is having authoritative control over your business operations and in-house accountability.

Summer Data Center Improvements — Increased Capacity and Increased Energy Efficiency

More Data Center — Greener Data Center

The Michigan Data Center has been pretty busy this summer with physical upgrades. We’ve been working to increase our capacity (to meet the ever growing demand for data center space here in Detroit) improve reliability, and maximize our energy efficiency. Our strategy for a greener data center is a more energy efficient data center.

More Power

More demand means we need more power, and to provide that we’ve doubled the uninterruptible power supply (UPS) capacity and upgraded our generator to supply a full megawatt of backup power.

Waveform now operates four completely independent UPS units. This allows us to provide fully redundant power feeds to customers. All of our uninterruptible power supplies are Liebert, because we believe that they offer the best reliability and efficiency for the industry. A Liebert UPS operates at 94% energy efficiency, which is the most efficient operation of any battery UPS available right now.

Our new generator is a custom-built Kohler full megawatt generator. It’s has a twin turbocharged V-12 diesel engine that operates more efficiently than our old generator. The new generator meets the EPS’s tier 3 emissions standards, meaning it’s more environmentally friendly than the old generator as well.

Moreover, Waveform now uses only ultra-low sulfur fuel, which decreases the amount of sulfur dioxide released during generator runtime.

More Cooling

We’ve also added 180 tons of heat rejection capacity to the Michigan Data Center’s climate control plant. This increase not only adds capacity, but it increases our energy efficiency by an estimated 10%. The increased cooling load means we can more efficiently and reliably cool the data center on hot summer days, and we can take better advantage of free cooling provided by the old Michigan winters.

Michigan's New High-Tech Economy

We’ve seen quite a few changes happen in Michigan, not just in the past decade but also in the past couple years. Some changes are bad economic news, but we at Waveform Technology remain convinced that a new high tech based economy is rising in Michigan. Waveform Technology is committed to promoting this growing industrial sector and we believe that it is the future of Michigan.

The tough economic times means we have seen some of our clients retool their business, cut back on their expenses, or simply close up shop in the past couple years. However, during that same time period we have turned up a refreshingly large number of new businesses in our data center, many of which are start-ups. Difficult economic times may be hard on some businesses, but there are still many creative and enterprising individuals who look at Michigan and see opportunity.

Colocation Upgrade Path (And a Testimonial)

Start-ups usually have limited budgets for IT, but not limited needs. Moreover, for many technology or Internet based start-ups their IT needs are absolutely crucial for their development. To meet these important needs and limited budgets, Waveform technology offers a range of flexible colocation options and a useful growth path. Many of our customers have grown through several rack sizes.

One of those customers is The Linux Fix, a provider of Dedicated Servers, Brian Downey, one of The Linux Fix’s principals, had this to say about how colocation has helped The Linux Fix grow: "We started by colocating 4 rack-mount servers with Waveform nearly 10 years ago, and since then they've provided an extremely well-defined upgrade path for our hosting needs: 1/4-rack, 1/2-rack, then full rack; and most recently helping us price out a secured cage."

Brian went on to say that, "Without the flexibility and cooperation Waveform Technology provides, we wouldn't have a business. Thanks to their customer-first approach, they've been able to custom tailor colocation packages for our specific needs, and allows our colocation expenses to be proportional to our business revenue."

Brian says it better than we can.
